Get the lesson, NOT the scars…
THE BACKSTORY:
I grew up in St. Louis. Evidently, bad news travels fast… and reaches far.
I live in Wichita now and I heard yesterday (through social media) that a well-known St. Louis area furniture company, with an outstanding reputation, for many years, had an incident where the people delivering furniture to a new customer’s house, stole a wedding ring and other valuable items from an elderly couple.
The company did not handle it satisfactorily at first, and the word of this incident predictably and “virally” spread throughout St. Louis and made its way to me… 7 HOURS AWAY… in Wichita.
THE SCARS:
LOTS of damage has been done. DECADES of advertising… DECADES of earned goodwill… POOF!
THE LESSON:
If you’re joining the list of employers who are lowering their hiring standards because you “need bodies now” for reason X, Y or Z, then you might want to reconsider.
You might even be able to rationalize it because “it’s harder than it used to be” and it seems like “everyone else is doing it” too.
Don’t follow that crowd. They’re wrong. Do better.
