“It’s just the nature of the business.” (Me: Is it really?)

“Nobody wants to work.” (Me: Nobody?)

“You have to be OK with a “certain amount” of employee theft” (Me: OK with it?)

I could go on… for a long time… with example after example (feel free to add your own in the comments section).

You get what you accept. And, you do not have to accept the “wisdom” of people who aren’t solving your company’s problems.

Let me give you an example. Ever heard someone (with high turnover in the retail industry) say something like… “It’s retail. Everyone has high turnover in retail.” They say it as if there is literally nothing they can do about it and proceed as if it is OK.

The Container Store has been named to FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies to Work For® list, with six years spent in the “Top 5.” And, in an industry known for its notoriously high turnover rates, The Container Store reported voluntary turnover among full-time employees as low as 5.7%.

That is NOT a misprint. 5.7% TURNOVER in RETAIL.

The CEO, Kip Tindell, wrote a book called “Uncontainable” and it tells how they did it. My favorite part was how he detailed and documented how ONE great employee was more valuable than THREE regular ones.

Paying TWICE the price (in wages) saved his company money. (Three times the work for twice the price usually does!)
