Sure, that toxic employee may have valuable skills, knowledge and experience. But, is it worth what you pay them PLUS the salaries of four more people you’d need to hire to do the extra work they create for everyone else?
Having one toxic employee is bad. Having a toxic culture (created by several toxic employees) is even worse.
THIS is why you take your time and don’t cut any corners on your employee selection processes. Solve toxic employee issues before they begin. Gather as much job related information as you can BEFORE you make an offer (background checks, reference checks, trial periods, pre-employment psychometric testing, etc.).
If one toxic employee slips through the cracks, make sure they understand there is a clear choice they must make. They have the choice to shape-up or make other arrangements for their employment. To toxic employees, your silence as a leader regarding their behavior and actions gets interpreted as consent.
