Pobody’s nerfect… I mean, nobody’s perfect.

Employees hope that good leaders don’t make mistakes.  They also know that the GREAT leaders admit them, share the lessons, acknowledge the impact and pivot accordingly.

While great leaders create teachable moments, accept responsibility and adapt so the same mistakes aren’t unnecessarily duplicated, poor ones “spin” the truth to make themselves look good, avoid responsibility and blame others. Employees know the difference. They trust the former and don’t the latter.

Healthy cultures are nurtured and protected by great leaders, while harm comes to organizations lacking them.

No pain is too great for the people who don’t have to feel it. Employees will be much more forgiving when they understand what decisions were made and why. It is a show of strength to admit mistakes and change for the better.  It’s a sign of weakness to cover mistakes up and let things remain the same, especially if you or your leaders are the ones causing, rather than feeling that pain.

Jason Greer, co-author of the book People Matter Most, and I discussed this topic in this short clip and many others related to labor relations, healthy cultures and union avoidance in the full episode.
