So… you want to improve your culture? Where do you start?

You DON’T improve your culture by working on your culture. You DO improve it by working on the systems that impact your culture according to Don Harkey when we talked about that during a recent podcast.

What kind of systems? For example, what about your systems for hiring people?

If your current system is to cut corners, hire fast and all you do with your people is churn em’ and burn em’ then it shouldn’t be a surprise to see a culture lacking commitment, teamwork and alignment around your company’s values.  By contrast, if you take the time to gather as much job related information as you can using background checks, drug tests, pre-employment psychometric assessment tools for skills, attitude and personality, along with interviews and trial periods, then the end result, your culture, will be much improved.

Imagine the impact on culture if all you did was put in a new system for employment testing and started screening job applicants for things like work ethic, reliability, and integrity?  Imagine having a workforce comprised of honest, reliable employees with a work ethic and contrast that against a workforce that lacked those things.

The impact is predictable. Companies who do this typically experience things like lower labor costs (more work accomplished with fewer people), reduced turnover, less conflict and unnecessary drama.

Those are DRAMATIC improvements on culture. Like Don said, they come from working on the systems that improve culture.
