What is your company going to do to adapt to and overcome the challenges of the worker shortage?
You might have to pay more. You might have to treat the employees you have differently and better.
And, if you are going to do all that extra work and spend all that extra money, you might want to consider a counterintuitive strategy. Try RAISING your hiring standards. Yes, I said raising your standards.
Do MORE and better applicant screening (drug tests, background checks, interviews, trial periods and pre-employment psychometric assessment tests for things like skills, attitude and personality), not less. It is imperative that you maximize your ability to identify the best and avoid the worst.
Why? If your labor costs are going to go up, it becomes even more important to get more work and better work accomplished from each and every employee. It is a mistake to lower your hiring standards and “take what you can get” because you “need bodies” yesterday. And, there are LOTS of companies making that mistake.
